Thirteen governorship candidates in Yobe state have signed a peace accord and pledged to conduct themselves peacefully in the forthcoming general elections.

The peace accord, which was signed at the office of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Damaturu, was signed by the representatives of the candidates.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, Abdulmaliki Sunmonu, who is also the chairman Inter-agency Consultative Committee on election security, urged the candidates to respect the accord for peaceful elections.

He also urged the candidates to pass the message of peace to their supporters to abide by rules and regulations of election processes.

“You should warn them against anything that instigates violence, like hate speech during campaigns and defacing of opponent’s posters” he said.

In his remark, the APC governorship candidate, Mai Mala Buni, who was represented by his running mate, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, said he was satisfied with the electioneering process adopted by INEC and assured of his party’s commitment to conduct itself peacefully before, during and after the elections.

“We must thank the INEC and the security agencies for organizing this peace accord for the successful conduct of 2019 elections” he said.

Also, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Yobe state, Ahmad Makama, said he was impressed by the number of candidates that honoured the event.

“Almost all the representatives of the political parties are present, and that has given us more hope that all the elections would be peaceful. It’s our mandate to provide the level playground and we are committed to it,” he said.

He drew the attention of the candidates to the PVCs that were still unclaimed at its various offices.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who is contesting for the seat in the Senate, was also represented by his deputy, Abubakar D. Aliyu.
